American Snuff Co. Completed the Largest Energy-Saving Project in West Tennessee in 2015
In 2015, American Snuff Co.’s Memphis facility undertook an energy-saving initiative that created an estimated annual energy and maintenance cost savings of $246,841 by replacing all of the plant’s metal halide fixtures with LED fixtures.
The initiative, called the LED Lighting Project, was carried out in concert with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), a corporate agency that provides electricity for business customers and local power distributors, serving about 9 million people in parts of seven southeastern states. The TVA offers EnergyRight Solutions programs that allow companies to make smart energy choices while enhancing their bottom line.
In 2014, the Memphis facility set out to find an alternative to the metal halide fixtures, which are costly, have a short lifespan, and can create a hazard if broken. In 2015, the Memphis facility replaced 1,717 metal halide fixtures with LED fixtures, resulting in the largest energy savings in West Tennessee for TVA’s fiscal year. Because the initiative was registered with the TVA, American Snuff Co. received an energy incentive rebate of $170,447.17.
This project not only helped the company’s Memphis facility save money, it also helped provide superior light levels throughout the plant and addressed obsolescence issues.
